Wow you are doing really well for someone who has not seen opera until a few months ago. This is my first Ring cycle and I have been going to the opera for over twenty years! Luckily you have access to the Met so you can catch up on such a great range of operas quite quickly since they show so many. We do not have such a full schedule of performances in Australia.
I am returning to La Traviata here as well, but not until early May. Hopefull all will be well and we will both see the wonderful Natalie Dessay again!

Katy – I have to say I loved the performances, especially Hvorostovsky’s and Natalie Dessay was brilliant, but I hated the staging as did the people I went with. I have seen La Traviata several times and much prefer the traditional set

Mr. Daniels, who played Caesar at the Met in 2007 for the last run of John Copley’s dull 1988 production of this opera, is again remarkable, singing with his full-bodied sound, emphatic delivery and technical command. He conveys the emperor’s vulnerability when he finds himself bewitched by Cleopatra or touched by the anguish of the suffering Cornelia. But when called for, Mr. Daniels can make fun of himself, as in when Caesar must rush from Cleopatra’s chambers to avoid the advancing forces of Ptolemy. As Mr. Daniels stops to dispatch bravura run after bravura run, Ms. Dessay’s frantic Cleopatra keeps trying to push him out the door to safety.

The hearty baritone Guido Loconsolo, in a notable Met debut, is a muscular and menacing Achillas, a general and a power-hungry adviser to Ptolemy. The countertenor Rachid Ben Abdeslam, also in a Met debut, brings vocal sheen and comic antics as the eunuch Nirenus, the confidant of Cleopatra and Ptolemy. And the baritone John Moore is a vocally robust Curius, a Roman tribune in a Scottish kilt. A kilt? Why not? In one scene Cleopatra appears in jodhpurs.

He gets inside the issues the opera tackles by likening Caesar and his Roman conquerors to British imperialists of the late 19th century. Just as the Romans viewed the Egyptians as exotic others, the British felt at once superior to, and baffled by, the people and customs of India, the Middle East and the other realms they lorded over. So working with the playful costumes designed by Brigitte Reiffenstuel, Mr. McVicar presents Caesar and his troops as British officers in bright red uniforms, while the Egyptians are arrayed in motley styles: Indian, Moroccan, Asian, Middle Eastern. To these clueless conquerors, all these exotics are alike.

Then Bellini experienced the re-occurrence of an illness which had emerged in Venice due to pressure of work and the bad weather, and which consistently recurred after each opera. The gastro-enteric condition—which he described as "a tremendous inflammatory gastric bilious fever"— resulted in his being cared for by friends. It was not until the summer, when he went to stay near Lake Como, that the pressure to decide upon a subject for the following winter's opera became more urgent. That Pasta owned a house near Como and would be staying there over the summer was the reason that Felice Romani traveled to meet both her and Bellini.

Was that your thrd time Siggy? Wow.
I was there tonight as well. Disappointed not to see Dessay but not entirely surprised. Her replacement did extremely well though.
How was the applause and cheering for Hvorostovsky (Alfredo’s father) in act two?! He is on fire at the moment!
Polenzani (Alfredo) sounded excellent tonight as well. His diction is amazing and I love his big high note just after he has gotten dressed.
And how about the Timpanist who retired after 66 years? I wish I was that sprightly!
